Music Censorship Taking Away Our Rights

ay. At the present time at least eleven of the states have bills out trying to censor music. More states join the fight each day as president of the PMRC, Barbara Wyatt, campaigns to states to keep music censored. Perhaps the most shocking of the bills is in Tennessee. This bill proposes that "manufacturers, producers, sellers and any other providers to the public of interactive video game products and services, video program products, motion picture products, and sound recording products (to) submit to the Joint Committee on Children and Youth of the Tennessee General Assembly and the Department of Children's Service a joint proposal for a system for labeling the violent content in interactive video game products and services, video program products, motion picture products, and sound recording products." This would basically entitle social workers to take time off of such things as molestation, neglect, and child abuse cases, to decide what is and what isn’t appropriate for children to be watching, listening to and playing. When put in those terms it puts everything in a different light. It allows a person to see that perhaps a dirty word on their child’s CD may not be as bad as the neglect of other children. It allows people to reevaluate and set their priorities.The states aren’t the only people fighting for censorship. Stores such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart have now resorted to editing the CD’s before they go onto the shelves. Heads of Wal-Mart along with the heads of the PMRC now are fighting for ways to have the stickered and edited albums removed from the shelves completely. Other small name stores around the country have refused to sell stickered albums, which may prove to be a severe violation of the artists first amendment rights (Mass.
