Relevancies on Falling Down
Relevancies on Falling Down The movie Falling Down was a story of a middle-aged man going through a lot of turmoil in his life. He was recently divorced from his wife and daughter. where soon after he was given a restraining order against them. He was then fired from his job, this was the culmination of his problems. He went throughout Los Angeles and decided to make his point heard in several different ways. He shoots up a burger place and beats up a convienence store with a bat just because he is unhappy. Our class looked at this movie in several different ways. There were many relevancies pointed out in our book that I would like to discuss. I personally enjoyed this movie. I thought the points that were being expressed were issues in everyday society. I think one of the main relevancies is that of timing. His wife and daughter left him and he lost his job around the same time. This also comes up that when he walks into the burger place. He wants breakfast but he is 5 minuets late to get breakfast and he gets real upset but the manger still won’t give him breakfast. So he decides that he is going to make a point that he should be heard and he decides to shoot the ceiling till he got his way. Even though he scared everyone in the place to think of him as a robber he pays for his meal and then he leaves. Timing is also a large part of Detective Pendergast’s character in the movie. He is about to retire that day when this case comes up. He works on the case the whole day and by the end of the day he realizes that he isn’t ready to retire just yet, that he still loves what he is doing. Another large relevancy that I came across was that of unexpectedness. Throughout the movie D-Fens ( the man) does things that are completely unexpected. He is sitting in traffic when all of a sudden he decides to get out and leave his car and walk away. After he does that he goes into a little convienence store when he asks for change, he is told he has to buy something. But there is nothing cheap in the store. So he flips out and starts yelling at the store owner. The owner feels threatened so he takes out a bat. D-Fens then takes the bat out of the owners hand and proceeds to destroy the store displays commenting on their prices. Most of D-Fens actions are completely unbecoming of the “common” man. Looking through the data that was collected, I learned that all of the men in the class liked the movie. Many other relevancies were also brought up by the men. The “common” man was brought up, and I think it is a great point. The common man is portrayed by his style of dress and car he drives. He wears a plain white color shirt and a dark tie, a stereotypical common man. He drives a typical car in an ordinary color not standing out, being common. Another applicable idea about the movie is that of violence. This is a very violent movie, there is a lot of action in the movie. D-Fens then beats up two gang-bangers and then they turn around and try a drive by shooting. Then they turn the corner and crash. This is when he got the guns for the rest of his journey. Then he goes into the golf course where he threatens one guy into having a heart attack, by waving a gun at them. The violence though is what i think turned some of the women off to this movie. The women in the class were torn between liking the movie and disliking the movie. I think thought that the women in the class picked up on several issues that the men didn’t pick up on. Most of the women picked up on the relationship between D-Fens and his daughter. His daughter doesn’t understand the situation really wants to be close to her father at the end of the movie, right before he is killed. However she doesn’t understand the situation that his anger has put on their family. He does love his daughter but his sudden explosive, violent behavior caused her mother to get a restraining order against him. Another area the women in the class keyed on were the politics involved in the movie. The politics of all of the guys on the police force with Pendergast and how they all make fun of him because it was his last day. The politics was also the between Pendergast and his wife due to the fact that he did everything in his life just for her. And that she didn’t really know what he wanted so finally he decided that he had enough and he decided not to quit the force. Another point that was brought up often was the fact that all he wanted was to have his voice heard. That is why he only trashed the little store and not rob the place. Or why he was pissed that he couldn’t get breakfast that is why he shot the gun to draw attention not to harm anyone. He was just trying to get his point across in the movie. I liked the movie for the many parts that were relevent to everyday life. I think the class as a whole picked up on most of the main points of the movie. The “common” man attribute I think is the most important relevancy in the movie. Most of the other points feed off of this one. Overall the class liked the movie as a whole. Bibliography: none
