The CPU ran with 1533 MHz with conventional air cooling. She is to come with the 760MP-Chipset in the second quarter of 2001 with dual Athlon systems on the market. EDIT: First thing my overclocking friends noticed...was that there are not 4.....but 5 L1 bridges......that the core is around 33% larger than a T-Bird (guess-work) and that the size of the HSF looks like total overkill to us.....oohh and btw....i now have a new PALLY desktop-theme ! ;) Talk about it | Read More: tecChannel -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD to unveil new chips, delay others - 5:49 AM - Lars CNET has a story about the launch of the 1.33GHz and 1.3GHz Athlon's.....it would seem that we will have to wait untill Q3 for the desktop version of the AMD Palomino...i guess Intel is simply not pushing AMD enough....and the good folks at AMD are not at all scared about Intel launching the P4 1.7GHz soon......here's a snip: The risk of delay is also not huge. The current Athlon desktop chip can be extended well past 1.3GHz, said AMD, which will allow the company to stay close to rival Intel in the speed race. Speed is only one factor in chip performance, but it is one of the most crucial when it comes to consumer marketing. The Pentium 4 tops out at 1.5GHz, but a 1.7GHz version is due in May. "We can keep the leadership with the cores we have now and concentrate on Palomino" for mobile uses, said Mark De Freie, product marketing manager in AMD's Computational Products Group. AMD's mobile Athlon chip will "ship in volume this quarter up to 1GHz...to enable (manufacturer) availability next quarter," he added. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.33GHz Athlon's for sale.... - 5:27 AM - Lars Ryan (OCZ) told me that the OCZ Store is selling this CPU right away......so if you want the fastest CPU...go get it while they're in stock ! (Very limited quantity) Ryan also told me that he's thinking about giving one of these babies to someone at our Forum...for FREE.....so keep an eye on the Forum ! ;) Talk about it | Read More: OCZ Store -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD Introduces 1.33GHz AMD ATHLON !! - 5:06 AM - Lars Here's the official AMD Athlon™ page....with all the goodies on this new monster CPU ! :) Here's the 1.33GHz and 1.3GHz Athlon benchmarks: Official Athlon™ Processor Benchmarks ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.33GHz Athlon REVIEW'S - 4:53 AM - Lars Yep...at midnight AMD released the AMD Athlon "C" 1333 MHz....as you know.....this is the new King Of CPU's.....and one heck of an overclocker....i have tried to gather all the 1.33GHz reviews in this post..... so check them out ! :) I highly recommend the 1.33GHz Athlon Review at Ace's Hardware.....it's called "The 1.333 GHz Athlon: A 1.5 GHz CPU In Disguise"....here's a snip: Lastly, the clockspeed headroom of the Athlon is nothing short of amazing. Who would have thought that this 10-stage pipeline would be able to reach more than 1.5 GHz with (excellent) air-cooling on a 0.18 micron process? Realistically, many would have expected that the 1.33 GHz Athlon, just like the 1 GHz PIII, would have been very hard to overclock beyond its specifications. This core's clockspeed is more limited by power dissipation than by architecture. This shows that each pipeline stage of the Athlon is extremely well balanced. No, a 1.7 GHz Palomino is not that far fetched... Once again, kudos to the engineers who have designed this amazingly efficient architecture. A masterpiece! EDIT:Uuummm.....i saw something of interest in Tom's review.....check this out : For the real performance freaks Athlon 1333 could mean a lot more. It is much more overclockable than Athlon 1200 and running cooler than its predecessor as well. I doubt that it will take AMD long to be ready for Athlon at 1466 MHz. This clock speed can definitely be reached before the highly successful Thunderbird core will need replacement. Intel's life hasn't become any easier today. Talk about it | Read More: AthlonOC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FiringSquad has posted a surpricingly positive article about converting from the "Dark Side" Pentium III......to the "Right Side"....getting a kewl new AMD Athlon rig....here's a snip: The only other Intel option I would have is the Pentium IV. Could I really call it an option? Cost? Upgradabilty? Speed? I could just as easily poke hot irons through each of my toes before I consider this. With Intel out of the scene, that leaves two options from AMD - the Duron or the Thunderbird. If cost were a bigger part of the equation, I would take the Duron in a heartbeat. Those processors are insanely overclockable, and they cost a mere $50. Getting a 900 MHz Duron for the cost of a night out on the town is a bargain. Both processors have been listed on nearly all resellers pricelists here in Denmark.....for more than a week now. Just today...one danish reseller told me over the phone that one of his channel's already have the 1.33 GHz Athlon C....and that i could have it delivered within 4 -5 days. I called several resellers to ask them about the launch of the 1.33GHz Athlon C....and to find out more about the FACTORY UNLOCKED L1 BRIDGES RUMOR....and they all told me the same thing....when it comes to the 1.2GHz Athlon C....some are locked..and some are not....one stated that "This may all change with the 1.33GHz part !!!"....i think....hinting about the 1.33GHz Athlon that more processors....if not all...will come as factory unlocked !!! ;) Also...i think it's safe to assume that AMD will announce the AMD Palomino at CeBIT....we're ofcourse talking about the mobile version for the notebook market. The desktop version will likely be announced sometime in Q2. Hhhmmm.....about the AMD 760MP Chipset....i'm HOPING that AMD will announce this as well at CeBIT.....anyways...it's more than likely that Tyan will show off the Tyan Thunder K7 (Dual Athlon motherboard).....IMHO AMD needs to launch this soon.....if they want to grab a larger piece of the "pie" from Intel. The corporate market is where the REAL money is to be found..... Looking at some material about CeBIT...and checking under Advanced Micro Devices.....i can see 64-bit processors listed.....maybe the boys and gals at AMD will be showing the "Hammer" to the Press ??? Also......expect some kewl announcements from the video card and motherboard-manufacturers ! ;) Here at AOC/HWOC...we will try to keep you posted on everything happening at CeBIT this week....so...STAY TUNED !!! Please remember that Friday is last chance to enter our HUGE GIVEAWAY !! Talk about it | Read More: AthlonOC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOYO Announces DDR Motherboards, Previews Other Advanced Designs at CeBIT - 6:14 AM - Lars I found this Press Release from Soyo....about their new DDR motherboards for both AMD and Intel platforms....everything will be displayed at CeBIT this week...here's a snip: New DDR motherboards from SOYO include the SY-K7ADA for AMD Socket-A Duron and Thunderbird CPUs, and the SY-7ADA for Intel Corp's FC-PGA 370 Pentium III CPUs. However, KT266, its DDR successor to KT133, has been delayed in order to have Pro266 ready as early as possible. Thus, ALi and AMD have beaten VIA to market by a number of months The question on everyone's mind is... is KT266 worth waiting for? We have gotten our hands on the very first KT266 sample out of VIA Technologies, and intend to show you its true colors. Talk about it | Read More: VIA Hardware -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 2001 Industry Update - 8:45 AM - Lars Dean Kent over at RWT has posted his excellent March 2001 Industry Update.....a good read....here's a snip: A spokesperson from AMD insisted that the Mobile Palomino will be introduced this quarter, followed by the desktop version next quarter. Morgan should follow a similar release schedule. Whether they will ship in quantity, or will follow the same agonizingly slow ramp that has characterized the 1GHz+ Athlons remains to be seen. With only about two weeks left in the quarter, it should be pretty easy to guess when to expect the official announcement. It appears that at this time the slowest speed Athlon shipping to the retail channels is 1GHz, with a 900MHz Duron soon to appear. With the fastest PIII running at 1GHz and the P4 almost stuck at the gate, this is an almost surrealistic scenario for anyone who has been in the industry for more than a couple of years. Reportedly, dismal P4 sales have taken their toll on Intel revenues. With only the Tualatin to look forward to in Q2, there can't be much to cheer about for Intel supporters, as even DDR SDRAM gives no real boost to the platform. In fact, by the time Tualatin appears AMD will already have much faster Athlon parts shipping, and will be approaching current P4 speeds. In order to find out the cause of the problem, we discussed the issue with VIA and asked them for details of the boot process of the KT133A, which we hoped would lead to a solution - or at least an explanation. Talk about it | Read More: Anandtech -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD Sledgehammer - AMD's 32/64-bit Weapon ! - 5:02 AM - Lars Legion Hardware has posted an article about AMD's upcoming 64-bit processor.....the Sledgehammer....here's a snip: It will be very interesting to see how the Sledgehammer unfolds into the market and if AMD encounter any major problems. I can’t see the Sledgehammer project going all that smoothly for AMD as this is there first venture into the processor war against Intel without following Intel. The K5, K6 and K7 were all created to compete with equivalent Intel products. The clear advantage the Sledgehammer has over the Itanium is the ability to run 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit applications this is where the Itanium is going to struggle. Reports indicate that the Itanium struggles to compete with current Pentium III and Athlon systems when running in 32-bit modes. This will cause major problems for Intel as the 64-bit platform is predicted to fully come into play in 2005! Yeah...i love it when people answer their own questions ! ;) Talk about it | Read More: Legion Hardware -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz(C) Overclocking Test - 4:47 AM - Lars VR-Zone has posted a review of the AMD Athlon C 1.2GHz.....they overclocked it to the max.....here's a snip: The only difference is that the "C" chips have a lower multiplier to reach the same clock speed packed with a higher Front Side Bus ( FSB ) speed. For example : "12x100 = 1200MHz" and "9x133 = 1200MHz". Produced in week 07, this is a very new chip, that should be nice for overclocking. Also a nice new standard is that all the 1200B/C and faster Thunderbirds have closed L1 bridges ! So you don't even have mess around with your new chip to unlock it ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMD Athlon 1.2GHz Review - 4:27 AM - Lars Inside-Hardware has posted a review of the AMD Athlon 1.2GHz.....here's a snip: The old new Athlon "Thunderbird" is very much improved to the old Athlon "Classic". Some of the ways AMD improved it for them as well as for us. They made it cheaper to make and sell. They made it on a new platform with many more options than the old. AMD also improved the manufacturing process; incorporating copper interconnect technology that provide a much cleaner signal than aluminum can. There is rumor that is also aids in overclocking the chip as well as cooling. I have yet to see this proved but it may aid or it may not. One change in the new core I did not like is the reduced amount of L2 Cache. They went from 512kb to 256kb. This impacts the performance of the new chip allot but not enough for it to be slower than its older brother. They make up for this lost by making the cache run at full clock speed. Sounds easy. But until now we have seen only crude do-it your-self solutions like strapping or even taping a 80mm fan on a 60mm heat sink. For a couple of months now, here in Japan, factory-finished 60mm to 80mm aluminum adapters have been available - we previewed one here. The latest addition is the 90mm aluminum adaptor.
