Styles and Influences
Styles and Influences Running head: Critical Thinking Styles and Forces of Influence Critical Thinking Styles and Forces of Influence Critical Thinking: Strategies in Decision Making Thinking Styles and Forces of Influence One of the major obstacles encountered at Crossroads Hospitality was the inefficiency of the payroll department in regards to how they obtained their data from the various properties managed. This department handles the calculations, printing, and distribution of paychecks to over one hundred properties nation wide. Currently this department handles the payroll as manual data entry, with the general managers of the individual property submitting their payroll on ledgers or excel spreadsheets, and the payroll clerks verifying for accuracy, at which point this data is input into the ADP payroll system for check distribution. The base problem is the inefficiency of the system. They need to find a system that would streamline the work process while meeting the needs of both the payroll department and the managers at the properties. The payroll department was in need of a system, which would allow for a system of checks and balances, providing ease of implementation with minimal conversion of data between the new software and the current ADP system mainframe. Also, the payroll department would be challenged during the up coming months to accept responsibility for more hotels without increasing personnel or working hours, so the system would need to allow for maximum growth and flexibility. The general managers at the properties faced with a completely diverse set of obstacles. Since they were currently entering their payroll manually on either ledgers or using Excel spreadsheets, they were faced with emplenting a system that was completely unfamiliar to them. Some of the obstacles they had to overcome was the lack of a system of checks and balances on employee time cards (currently employees record their times on paper or punch cards), mistakes which caused under pay or over pay for the employees and no immediate accessible reporting methods of employee overtime worked over a forty-hour workweek. One of the most pressing issues faced by both the general managers and corporate operations was the company as a whole lost over $500,000 per year to “bad” over time. Within this the guidelines of these needs, the Information Technology department had to find a system compatible for both parties and that would use current technology available at the hotels such as computers, software, and telephone lines to run the time clocks. Training was also an issue because of distance between the hotels and the diverse schedule of the personnel. There are various forms of critical thinking. Some of these are scientific, persuasive, and creative. The type of critical thinking required for the task largely depends on the context in which critical analysis is required. The term “context” refers to everything involving a particular event or development of thought such as social, cultural background, and political beliefs. These are defined as the “forces of influence” when an event occurs. This can also include elements specific to the individual involved such as their gender, culture, educational status, or position within the corporate environment. In the example above, various types of critical thinking would be used. Such as, from the Information Technology department would use scientific thinking. Scientific thinking method is the process by which one recognizes a problem, formulates a hypotheses, uses the hypothesis to predict quantitatively the results, and performs test of the productions. This would involve the process of determining what is compatible with the current systems in place, researching what products offer the flexibility and expandability. Operations and sales would use persuasive critical thinking in a successful marketing and promotion of the product. The key focus would be to discern the key selling points of the product. These points could be logical and would rely on economic influences to persuade the owners of the hotels to provide funds for the new system. This would show what advantages the new system has over the system currently in place. By definition persuasive critical thinking is.. The forces of influences for the goal of a new payroll system involve the characteristics of three different audiences. These are the payroll associates, management (both corporate and field) and the owners. Their work culture and their managers would influence the payroll associates. The general managers influence would be based in both educational background and ethics. From the general managers point of view the system implemented would have to require little training. In addition, since most of the payrolls done are manually, most general managers do not take the time to thoroughly research problems, and instead hide issues. With the automated system, this would force the general managers to pay more attention to detail and become responsible for their actions. In addition, education plays a key roll depending on their background concerning technology and what influence computer literacy will play on their training. Bibliography:
