Where is Sarah
Where is Sarah Many characteristics define people as being human, but when it comes down to it what makes a person human? This is a problem that has arised for some time in the subject of philosophy. More specifically, assume that your best friend Sara has been in a very serious accident and is going to die. A team of doctors comes to her with a proposal to transplant her brain into a mechanical body that will look completely human, but will be male. She agrees to the transplant and it is successfully carried out. She "awakes" in her new mechanical body with her memories intact. Her biological body is left attached to mechanical support and her heart and lungs are "working" to keep her body going. She looks like she is asleep. The question is where is Sara? My first instict was to say that Sara was in the mechanical body. The brain is what controls all the functions of the body. It is the central part of the human body. It also controls a persons feelings. It is true that all animals have a brain, but none as developed as the human's. Not everyones brain is the same either. That is what makes each person unique. While some may be more shy and timid, others could be more outgoing and loud. This is what atracks one person to another. Therefore Sarah will still be the same person as she always has been. Her brain is still there and is in control of what control her actions and thoughts. It just when you look at her a different image will be seen than before. With some adjustment time it will be easy to replace the thought of the old Sara with the new mechanical body. At least thats what i thought at first. After thinking of this promblem even more, I soon realized how important the body is to mind. For one, looks do make a difference on how a person feels. When you first look at a person what do you see? Their body. It is impossible to know what kind of person a person is before you really get to know them. Therefore people must rely on the their body to initiate people into relationships with them. If Sarah is now a male and mechanical many people will look at her differently. For one, just looking as though you are male will change how many look at her when first meeting her. How other look at Sara will change Sara'a view on life. Her looking as though she is male will find it harder for her to meet other males who she might be interested in. Since body does play a large part in attraction, although people don't like to admit it, it will change Sara view on life and herself. Her being an outcast now would make her self-esteem drop dramatically and also her attitude towards life. If this happens long enough it will change her mind. She will no longer be the same Sara as before. Another way of looking at it is like this. The way the body feels, makes a big difference in life. If her body is a machine how will she feel pain of touching something burning hot, how will she feel the relaxing touch of a friends hand, or even the warmth of a hug. The body will not be able to experience this. So how will the mind be able to interpet this? Will the lack of feeling affect her mind too? Not having a body to experience this, will cause her mind to miss out in something Sara has always had. This will change sarah. So then what is it, is she in the mechanical body or is she in the body in the hospital bed being kept alive.? This is where the problem of occurs. Why must philosophers have one definite answer? Sara is in both places. Her brain is in the mechanical body and her body in on the hospital bed. Sara is not complete. She is in two different places, and being this way things will never be the same as they were before. A better way to look at it is that there is no Sara at all. There is body in a bed that looks like her, but is unable to communicate with the world. There is also another entity that has Sara memories, but will be forever changed with the future events that occur. Slowly it will lose the characteristics that Sara once was before the accident, and turn her into a completely new and adapted Sara that will be different from the one before. She may even lose the memories of that past. This would mean that the mind of sarah no longer exist at all. It is apparent that there are many parts that make a person complete. A human can not be put into many pieces and then asked wich one is the body. They are all part of it, and without each and every piece a person is not complete. If a piece is missing the body will have to adapt and change to better suituate itself in the enviroment. This means it will not be what it used to no matter how much it may either look or act as thought it did before. Bibliography:
