In The Starry Messenger we see how he carefully and thoroughly observed the sky over long periods of time. He continues in the letter to the Grand Duchess with convincing explanations of his theories. To us it may seem obvious, but all this was very new to the people of Galileo's time. He then tries to convince the people that the true meaning of the scriptures is not he be taken literally. One reason is that the bible was written so the common people could read. It was not necessary for their salvation to explain the movement of the solar system. " Holy scripture can never lie, provided its true meaning is understood, which- I do not think it can be denied- is often hidden and very different from a simple interpretation" He also suggested it was just the wording and translations the lead to this misunderstanding. Even Copernicus used the terms "sunrise" and "sunset" even though he thought the earth was doing the rising and setting. It is evident is his letter to the Duchess that he was he was a reverent Catholic. Despite this fact, his inductive method refused to accept the generalizations of the scriptures. Summary:Galileo was a revolutionary. Besides his advances in mathematics, instrumentation, astronomy, and other scientific experiments, he was key to the development of modern logic. He valued induction more than deduction. Instead of building conclusions on an assumed set of widely accepted beliefs, the inductive method starts with observations. In fact, the only way to justify these generalizations was to repeatedly test them with experiments. Inductive method is the fundamental way to gain knowledge. Gal...
