Comedies and tragedies are both very different from each other, yet have some similarities also. Comedies and tragedies are both used for entertainment, both have darker elements, and tragedies can be use to prove a point. Comedies are generally used for entertainment because of the fact that they are supposed to be funny. Tragedies, on the other hand, are used for entertainment, but can also be used for proving an argument. Most comedies make people laugh, while tragedies are more on the serious side; both can be used for entertainment in this way. For example, in Tartuffe, a play by Molière, Tartuffe is trying to take over Orgon’s estate, but Moliére has this handled in a comical manner, rather than like Shakespeare in the play Antigone. Antigone’s brother is killed because he disobeyed the government, and there is no comedy in this play as far as how the characters handle the situation. Thus making Antigone a tragedy, and Tartuffe a comedy. People from all over gathered to watch these plays when they came out, and continued to watch them for a while. Also, comedies and tragedies can both be used to prove a point or argument. Comedies are generally funny, because it is generally easier to understand them. Tragedies are generally more serious to prove a point, and they also get a little complicated at times because they’re not as light-hearted as comedies. These are ways to prove points, or to prove arguments. However, both comedies and tragedies are somewhat similar; they both can contain darker elements. Some parts in comedies can be tragic, and tragedies generally are dark throughout the entire play. Although comedies are somewhat comical, with darker elements, one of the characters will most likely die in the end. Again, as in Tartuffe, there are darker elements, just that they are handled in a light-hearted, comical manner. Despite the fact that comedies and tragedies are different in some ways, they can also be similar. Tragedies are usually more serious, and comedies are generally funny.
