James Langston Hughes died, at 65 years of age, in New York City on May 22, 1967, after having an abdominal surgery. During his lifetime, he wrote sixteen books of poems, two novels, three collections of short stories, twenty plays, children's poetry, musicals & operas, three autobiographies, a dozen radio & television scripts, dozens of magazine articles, and many other things.
