The more escape routes you know, the better. Dark alleys, and easily hurdled fences are great, also stay away from any street lamps or houselights. I made sure I knew where the nearest corn field was, which was a guaranteed escape route.Make sure to stay absolutely still if you aren’t actually being chased. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to dash from a motionless state to gain distance between you and the cop. This will give away your location. I remember one incident where I was laying in a bush, just yards from the officer, and he never saw me. If I would have tried to run, he probably would have caught me. You can have a light beaming directly on you, and as long as you don’t move, the cop can’t be confident that you are really there. In another incident, I happened to be laying in plain sight with a spotlight right on me, in the middle of a baseball field. My adrenaline was steaming and all of my instincts told me to get up and run, but I stayed still and after a few uncomfortable moments, the officer gave up and left.If you’re in a car, and you’ve managed to lose the cop around a few corners, don’t think you’ve lost him for good. He’ll be squealing around the corner at any moment. Find an innocent driveway to park in, and shut your engine off. Get down and stay low, maybe even abandon your car and hide in a nearby bush. The cop will speed by soon with lights and siren roaring. If your heart wasn’t beating a million beats a second, it might even be humorous.I realize that in all reality, the smartest thing to do when being chased, is to never run in the first place, the punishment will be more than doubled if you resist arrest, but sometimes you don’t have a choice.
