storm In "The Storm" by Kate Chopin, the storm is symbolic for the turmoil Calixta is experiencing. Just as the storm came up abruptly and unexpectedly so came Alcee's visit and the hidden desire she still held for him. Before his visit, Calixta is quite content at home sewing while Bobinot and Bibi are away at the store and without warning the storm approaches. With the same amount of notice, Alcee appears to find refuge at her home from the downpour. The storm sets the mood for their lovemaking and is full of ferocity and excitement as it rages outside. I can sense the wildness that is happening both inside and outside Calixta's home. Yet, amid the turmoil there is a sense of peace and tranquility within the walls of her home. Just as she feels uncertainty with the impending storm, she also feels some uneasiness with Alcee's presence. Soon, any uneasiness she might have felt is soon dispelled and she is totally enthralled with her visitor. The storm makes us glad for Calixta that Alcee was there for her during the bad weather. It also borders them from the real world and their responsibilities and commitments. The storm almost makes it acceptable that are committing adultery. I forgot about Bobinot and Bibi, just as Calixta seemed to do amid the excitement of the storm. As the storm calms and she and Alcee hold each other , I remember her family again and wonder what she will do. As the storm passes and Alcee bids her farewell, she seems excused from her unfaithfulness. It seems to all be washed away with the storm. Bibliography:
