Britain and the European Union

r Itappears that they want to have their cake and eat it too, by gaining theeconomic benefits of union and not submitting to any social initiativesproposed by the EU. For Example in 1989 the all the member statesadopted a Community Charter of the Fundamental Social Rights ofWorkers, all that is except Britain, this charter was supposed to be afundamental building block in the construction of Europe, yet Britainrejected it saying that it would disrupt its vision of free and open tradeamong the member states of the European Economic Community. Thisaction is a demonstration of Britains attempts at avoiding the creation ofthe Federalist European Superstate. Sovereignty can be defined quite simply as the supreme authority tonot only declare law but create it, deriving this power from a populacewho have given up their personal sovereignty and power and vested it inthe sovereign8, in the case of Britain the sovereign is the Government,since the King passed sovereignty to the parliament over time. Britains ability to defend its sovereignty has been effectivelycompromised in the first instance by the very act of joining the EU. Thedeclared intent of the EU, to create an ever closer union, defines acertain path that the member states must follow. The path may be wideto allow a number of different routes to the intended goal, but in the endit restricts the sovereign nations ability to choose its own course ofaction both economically and socially. Three specific instances of the erosion of Britains sovereignty area)The European Communities Act 1972, which established a principlethat European Law would always prevail over British law in the eventof a conflict, effectively decreasing the supremacy of Parliament. b)TheSingle European Act 1988 (SEA) withered sovereignty more byreplacing unanimity rule, that is, any nations power to veto, withmajority voting in certain areas. therefore the power of the EuropeanParliament over Britain was further enh...
