Researchers are uncertain how much this loss may be but it is linked to the effects on productivity of consumers. Since most of the phones do come with an ear piece, this loss may be minimal as in the case for consumers productivity. A study showed that about half of all calls made are phone cell phones. With this amount, we can see that many people are very dependent on the use of cellular phones while they are driving. Perhaps this suggests that people would be more likely to acquire a hands-free device rather than restrain from using it. Some cellular companies are actually in support of this legislation such as Verizon and Motorola but on limited terms. They only support the proposals that allow the use of hands-free devices.It may seem ironic but the cellular industry may actually benefit a lot from this type of regulation. Many of the other countries that have a large share of total number of cellular phones have laws that mandate use of hands-free devices. The market for hands-free devices are around $3 billion today and is expected to be around $9 billion in the next 5 years, according to Jonathan Lawrence, vice president and senior analyst for a market research firm . Most hands-free devices are generally marketed by the phone producers today because not all devices are compatible with different brands of phones.Society:There may be some administrative costs in implementing the legislation but once implemented, the costs of enforcement can be lumped with enforcing other driving laws. Also, with the growth of the hands-free market, it seems that such laws in other countries have been accepted once passed and that most citizens are compliant.
