Common Good

age, requiring citizens to salute the flag daily at public schools. The government censors television and creates laws, such as gun control, to help protect their citizens from harm. When the Clinton scandal became headline news, Congress impeached the President on underlying terms that his manner was unbecoming as a president. This attempt to protect the "virtues" of America strongly contradicts the American's views, since while under Clinton their economy has risen, thus increasing their wealth. The ideas of the government, and that of its people, seem to be headed in two different directions. However, if we look more closely at the government's position, it seems to be that their actions to protect their people is just in self interest. Since the government is made up of human beings, Locke's Natural Law of people trying to constantly gain possessions still holds for them. The people of the government make the laws so that they will look good, thus increasing their status. Outwardly our country is run by two very different themes, that of working for self-interest or for the interest of the common good. However, when we dive into the situation it is easy to see that everything is really done for the good of one's self, not for the good of others....
