Anyone who lives in the United States or has lived in the United States has felt the effects of the death penalty. What the death penalty means is that a state can legally kill a person if that person was tried and convicted of a crime and then sentenced to the death penalty. The death penalty is only used for certain crimes that fall into the criteria for the death penalty to be used. This form of punishment has been around for quite a while in some, not all, of the states in the United States. Texas is one of those states where the death penalty in use. Since I live in Texas, I feel the effects of the death penalty. In my opinion, I believe the death penalty works and is an excellent form of punishment. One reason I believe this is because I don’t think that someone should be able to live their own life if they took someone else’s life or intended to take someone else’s life. Another reason I believe this is because I don’t think that other forms of punishments really work for such crimes. I believe the death penalty works and is an excellent form of punishment. I believe this because I feel that if a person can commit such a crime to end someone else’s life then they should not be able to have and enjoy their own life. I just don’t think it is fair. I understand that maybe a person might not have had the intention to kill someone else such as maybe in a car crash or even for self protection. Although most of the time that is not the case and if that is so then I feel the death penalty is a great idea. Mainly I just don’t like to see a criminal go to prison for a while and then be let out and still have his life to enjoy after he or she has ended someone else’s life and caused many people that were close to that person to hurt tremendously. There are many people with just the opposite opinion and with completely different views on the death penalty. Most of these people believe that there is better form of punishment than the death penalty. One of those other forms of punishment is life in prison. Other people believe that after a person has served their sentence in prison then that is enough punishment for the crime they have committed. I don’t believe in either one of these punishments because I don’t think that these punishments, especially the punishment where the person is let out after his or her sentence is up, can really work. Although I do think that the punishment of life in prison can work if the person did not kill anyone or have the intention of killing anyone but if the person did kill someone or had the intention of killing someone then they should be put to death. I am interested in this topic because it is such a big issue these days in America. This has always been a very controversial issue in America but the issue really came out more than usual within the past six months with the presidential election. Texas does have the most inmates put to death each year in the country and since George W. Bush was the governor of Texas at that time and running for president many of America’s voters who opposed Bush brought that issue up many times. These people were trying to scare American’s with the death penalty. Mainly asking them if they wanted someone like Bush as our president when he was the governor of the state that put the most inmates to death. Also, I am interested in this topic because there are many controversial times in Texas on whether or not a person really committed a crime that deserves the death penalty and whether or not the right person is being put to death for a crime. Sometimes these controversial times end up in violent outbreaks and protests when people have different views on what might have happened in the crime or when a person might not believe in the death penalty at all. For example, when Gary Graham was on death row and to be executed this last summer. There were many protests leading up to and during this event. There were many people and also groups that protested against this event because either they didn’t believe that Gary Graham committed this crime or they didn’t believe in the death penalty. Also, many of these protests became violent and they caused many The topic of the death penalty has affected many people all over the country and still does today. It can either affect them personally if someone close to them has been executed or it can affect them just because they are surrounded by the issue because of where they live. I have never had anyone close to me executed or anyone executed because of what they did to someone close to me. I am one of those people that is affected by the death penalty because of where I live. In Texas the death penalty is a big issue and it is a very controversial issue between people that have many different views. People that have had someone close to them executed are affected completely different by the death penalty than what I am because I have never had to feel those affects directly. Those people probably have completely different views on this issue than what I do. If I ever do end up having to feel those affects, I still don’t think I will change my point of view on the death penalty because I firmly believe in the death penalty. One last reason I believe that the death penalty affects me is because I feel that it keeps me more safe. I believe this because at least I know that a criminal that has committed such a horrible crime is not able to ever do it again. If they are not executed then there is still a chance of the criminal getting out at some point in time or even escaping and being able to commit The death penalty has become a big issue in the United States throughout the years. Since the death penalty has become such a big issue and I live in a state the supports this type of punishment I am interested and feel affected by this issue. Again, I don’t believe that criminals should be allowed to go free after killing someone. Also I don’t believe that some of the other forms of punishments really work.
