When he was 16 his grades were to poor to continue in school so he moved hometo his mother. He spent his time drawing and sketching. In 1906 Klara gave her sonmoney to go to Vienna to go and enjoy the music and architecture. In 1907 his mothergave him permission to use his inheritance, about 150 American dollars, to go to theacademy of fine arts. This would have paid for one year of study. When he applied hisapplication was not accepted. The director said he had little talent or creativity and shouldbecome and architect not a painter. Shortly after this his mother died. Adolf then decided to stay in Vienna and become an artist. He applied one moreat the academy and was again turned down. He spent a year painting pictures to show theacademy. His application was again turned down. More and more his talent forarchitecture was beginning to show. However since he was lacking a high schooleducation he couldn't become an architect. That was the time in which he becameinterested in German culture. Many of the students had a special admiration for Otto vonBismarck who had died in 1898. He was also very attracted to the characters of Germanmythology.Two years later his money ran out and he had to move into a poor house where hecould get free soup. He spent his time going to libraries and theaters and continued hisinterest in German culture. He would sit quietly and paint until politics were mentioned,then he run over and harass any within hearing range. Three years later he moved to the Home for Men. Here he would scratch out aliving by selling a few paintings. For a long time he wandered the streets. His familythought him to be dead. His friend Hanisch told Adolf that he could make a lot of moneyby making post cards ...
