Nixon Speech
Nixon Speech President Nixon’s contributions to American society are so vast that it would take me all of my time here this evening as well as most of the first year of my Presidency to list and discuss all of them with you. Never has a President contributed so vastly to building a dominant foreign policy as well as such a large domestic agenda. Having grown from such humble beginnings Richard Nixon, in the spirit of all that is American, fought his way to political stardom. As a young go getter, Nixon gain popularity by taking a strong stand against Communism, and the world it creates. Having known his share of political triumphs as well as losses, Nixon persevered, after a close race for the presidency in 1960. Almost as close as the one I was involved in. Having showed his stamina in the political arena for eight more years he staged a comeback into politics that set in motion, some of the greatest political ideas to date. With help from Henry Kissinger he started a movement into foreign policy that would lead to the ending of an awful conflict in Vietnam. Nixon opened up long since closed lines with the people of China and re-opened trade between our two super nations. He negotiated, SALT and SALT II agreements with the people of the now defunct Soviet Union which agreed to a great deal of disarmament of nuclear weapons as well as ending the space race between the countries. His Policies within the U.S. are so numerous I will only point out a few. He desegregated schools, started the environmental protection agency; his welfare reform ideas were so monumental. He conceived the DEA and rendered treatment for Vietnam veterans with drug problems. He made America a better place for us all to live. His problems with the Watergate scandal even taught American’s a great and often forgotten idea. Honesty is the best policy. As we look back on the United States history here tonight and the presidents who helped shape the American way of life Richard Nixon is remembered as leader who always fought the good fight and believed in his own ideas. Those ideas, which have kept us, the American people living under the blanket of freedom with the pride, that being an American brings. Nixon Quotations That I might advise you to use: 1. “History can bestow no honor greater than that of peacemaker” - with all the drama you are coming into in Slavic countries as well as the ongoing crises in the Middle East, this quote might come in handy. 2. “ we see the hope of tomorrow in the youth of today” - from Nixon’s first inaugural address promises hope for the future 3. “The past in many ways is infinitely more important than the present” -from Nixon’s Academie speech 1987 perhaps to be used to honor on days of remembrance Up till now all of the domestic policies instilled by you and your administration have been very successful. What is lacking however is a central theme to bring these together. The use of the term “the lift of a driving dream” seems to be as close as anyone seems to get. When you adopted the presidency, the U.S. had many problems. Many of these you have fixed and others you are still working on. It seems to me that your “domestic package” can be named after something you spoke about years ago when addressing a group of young adults, at a commencement address at Lafayette College, in 1956. You were speaking about communist Russia and Their “ New Look”. It would seem that America’s domestic policy dictates exactly what a “New Look” government is all about. Until your election in 1968 America’s policies were stagnating. The people needed something new. You have provided this for them. In each new program you start, or money you allot is given to promote the “New Look” United States. A place where nothing can stagnate because it keeps growing and progressing, new replaces old, and continues to get better. Wilson’s promises of “Car’s in garages” and “chickens on stoves”, demonstrates what the people wish to hear- something to rally around. I believe the echo of your earlier words can change the perception of the people and give them an idea to follow. Why create a slogan that is new or worked on. Base your domestic agenda on the world you have already seen, but do it the right way. Show them what a “New Look” government is all about. Nixon’s speeches in 1967 and 1986 both deal with issues of the world in two different times for American history. In 1967 communism reigned in many countries and China and the Soviet Union were the two powerhouses of the communist world. President Nixon briefed us on the events taking place all over the globe, from Latin America and Fidel Castro to Africa and thirty independent countries. Communism at this time in America was still rolling force conquering other nations and threatening other cultures way of life. The Soviet power was supplying weapons and other munitions to its brothers in Latin America. America was put in the middle of a growing communist world with atomic power becoming shifted and equal. The Soviets were shifting sides and working for peace in Vietnam while arming Middle East countries. Richard Nixon said it best in this address “ the Soviet change is one of the head and not of the heart”. President Nixon lies out the plan for an arms race with the U.S.S.R. believing that their overall goal is victory rather than peace. He tells us that we cannot ever let them become the military super-power. In the interest of our economic well being he encouraged us to keep up trading, and build what he deemed “our side of the bridge”. Nixon delivered another speech in 1986 at the World Affairs council. In this speech Nixon begins to focus on the ideas of Churchill and how we should begin to ally ourselves with others in an attempt to stop communist aggression. Nixon sets up the Soviet Union as having their contingency of other communists begin to fall away from them. He wonders if China and their newly found nuclear power will fall away from the Russian society. He points out Gorbachev’s need to spark economy, to allow the military to grow. He also points out that the Soviet regime despite talk about free enterprise must take more away from the people. The problem that existed in ’86 is that Gorbachev is not going to get rid of what has become his. Peace lies in the unity of these to super powers and the disarmament of a majority of their weapons. Nixon listed eight principle pillars that he saw to end the ongoing tension between our country and theirs. These pillars in Nixon’s eyes are the objects that must fall for us to achieve peace. In today’s world we look at how history unfolded and see that the Nixon philosophy, carries through and although we have no permanent peace we have one less powerful enemy Bibliography: November 27, 2000Speech for President Bush “The Presidents of My Lifetime” Re: Richard Nixon
