tion, stricter laws, and the prosecution of users, the number of people who have tried and currently use such drugs continues to increase. According to Kohn and Mercer (1971,125), “There are both empirical and theoretical reasons to suspect that drug use and drug-use attitudes may be related to overall sociopolitical ideology, notably attitudes in such spheres as authority, social differences, conventionality, and social deviance”. The root of the drug problem is the person’s own ideology, and if this ideological factor is real then the current drug policy is merely adding fuel to the fire. According to Kohn and Mercer (1971,126), in an unpublished study by Geber it was reported that “differences in questionnaire responses suggesting users lean to the rebellious end and nonusers to the authoritarian end of any authoritarianism-rebellion dimension”. This is suggests one of the main points in this study, and is similar to the actual survey that would be done. If such a relationship could be plausible it would be of importance to study its validity as it could lead to a change in the view of how to battle drug use. Literature Review There are many studies and articles based upon the subject of this study. Many of these espouse the very essence of this study, such as this said by Marx (1982,222), “authorities have been seen to “create” deviance by defining some of the wide range of behavior as illegal”. In Marx’s study he discusses the effects of social control in that 3 possible controls exist which all lead to increased “rule breaking”. One aspect that he calls escalation fully describes my theory and hypothesis. He adds to this by discussing covert facilitation. This he defines as hidden attempts to enforce actually encourage the breaking of the laws trying to be enforced. Along with this he talks about non-enforcement, which intentionally leads to rule breaking....
