I must search through the sources of these studies and then read those, and find the strongest arguments for and the weak arguments against in order to create a better theory.Data and Methods The possible relationship to be explored in this study is between government actions to inhibit drug use and the rate of drug use. I hypothesize that as government increases its attempts to prevent drug use the rate of drug use actually increases in accordance. The relationship will be positive in that as one increases then the other will increase in respect. The study itself will be correlational in that it will compare statistics in order to describe and explain. My independent variable will be the government’s efforts to inhibit drug use and will be composed of interval level data. The indicators of the independent variable will be budget outlays to anti-drug policies, number of people incarcerated for drug related crimes, number of drug programs, and amount of anti-drug legislation passed. The dependent variable consists of the rate of drug use for the year and will be measured in interval data. The indicators of this variable will be number of people who currently use drugs and the number of people who have sampled an illicit drug in the last year. This data will be compiled from several sources because it will be difficult to gather such statistics for the last 30 years. One such source will be the previous studies written about this subject such as the ones included in the literature review. Another will be various sources of statistical data such as Lexis-Nexis Statistical Universe, Library of Congress Statistics, and BJS statistical reports.
