The United States Role in International Environmental Policies through Treaties

The United States-Russia Joint Commission is another treaty the United States is involved in. Different United States agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Ageny, United States Agency for International Development, Department of Energy, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have been working with Russia. These agencies are helping Russia develop domestic emissions trading programs, energy efficient programs, and a plan to reduce natural gas pipeline leakage and improve inventories of greenhouse gas emissions. Also, the United States and Russia agreed to work together to develop tool that manage these emissions.The Montreal Protocol, which was originally the 1985 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, is a good example of an international environmental policy that has worked. Over 150 countries have signed the Montreal Protocol, which is an agreement among the participating nations to diminish the use of zone depleting chemicals such as CFC’s, halons, and methyl bromide. This treaty is a good example of the United States working with other countries to benefit the global environment. However, this treaty is not enough to fix the ozone. There are other treaties that involve working on helping climate change that the United States needs to participate in.At the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, there was a convention on climate change. The United Sates signed, ratified and entered it into force March 21, 1994. This is another agreement among over 150 nations to reduce emission levels of greenhouse gases. However, there were no real specific goals or a plan of action listed.
