Singhs research offers hope for a preventative measure in the future and possibly a clinical resolution to the issue; at this time it seems that Sallys parents could not have prevented her from being autistic. Although Sallys parents could not have prevented her disease. They can help their daughter by coping with it in a productive manner. There are many progressive practices currently being used to treat autistic patients. Some treatments such as oral secretin, live cell and stem cell therapy, and detoxification for heavy metals are in the beginning stages of research but other treatments have been in use for several years.(4) therapy is one commonly used form of treatment for autism. Secretin is a peptide hormone that stimulates pancreatic secretion. (4, pg. 63) This particular therapy is still relatively new to the medical world. However some patients who have opted to take it have found the treatment to be miraculous. (4, pg.59) Transdermal secretin therapy seems to have a varying affect on its patients. In a study done by A. D. Sandler and associates it is concluded that a single dose of synthetic human secretin is not an effective treatment for autism. The study was as follows: We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a single intravenous dose of synthetic human secretin in 60 children (age, 3 to 14 years) with autism or pervasive developmental disorder. The children were randomly assigned to treatment with an intravenous infusion of synthetic human secretin (0.4 g per kilogram of body weight) or saline placebo. We used standardized behavioral measures of the primary and secondary features of autism to assess the degree of impairment at base line and over the course of a four-week period after treatment.
