Being a Twin
Being a Twin As I walk through the crowded mall with my sister, little children stare, most adults do a discreet double take, and some bold adults question us outright. “Wow, are you twins?” “Do you know you look the same?” “What’s it like to be a twin?” “Do you have, like, psychic powers, or something with each other?” These are the most common questions twins hear. Almost all twins don’t really mind them and sometimes the attention is cool. Mostly, we just smile tolerantly at each other and answer them as best we can. After all, we don’t really know how to describe being a twin. We have never known anything else. Nonetheless, here we are. So, as a person who might not know exactly what she is talking about, I will try to briefly explanation to the general public the experience of being a genetic quirk. I have found that people have expectations of twins. The most common assumptions are that just because we look alike, my sister and I must have the same personality, dress the same all the time, like the same things, have the same friends, and generally be the same person. This is not necessarily true all the time. Most twins I have met, including my sister and myself, do tend have the same big circle of friends, but this is mostly due to having the same social surroundings and is not true for all pairs. Most twins also have a few close friends that are separate from their sibling. Most don’t share a personality. Again, some small parts are the same, but these parts can be explained by environment. My sister and I have different interests, are involved in many different activities, and have aptitudes in many different things. For instance, she is involved very heavily in the theater and political science departments at her college, and I am involved in volunteer work wherever I can find it and the nursing department. Finally, we don’t usually dress alike. We have not dressed in the same outfits every day since the age of six, when we started helping pick out our own clothes. When we do dress alike, it is only for special events. For instance, we are planning to do so for three days at the end of summer, due to our attendance at the Twins Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio and most twins find this a fun way to celebrate being a twin. Most pairs have the same philosophy. They may dress up for holidays or birthdays (the parents and other relatives find it cute), but not on an everyday basis. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. Some twins like to dress alike all the time, even as grownups. Some have the same friends, and some even have eerily similar personalities. To these people, I say “More power to you!” I have found it easier not to be one of those people. I have my own style, and would not want to conform, or have my sister conform, to someone else’s way of doing things. We only dress or act alike when WE want to, when WE choose to. Besides, the more alike we are, the more it tends to bring on the aforementioned comments. The last rumor that most people hear is that twins share a bond so strong that most people cannot even begin to understand it. This is true for most of us. I have heard it described as like being married to someone you cannot get divorced from. You can avoid your twin, but you will always have a part of him or her with you. You know when they are seriously hurt or when they need to talk. My sister and I can sit across from each other and talk in almost our own language. We can guess what the other is thinking most of the time. A bond extends beyond sister hood. A bond can only come from sharing a life with someone from the beginning of consciousness. As I told you at the beginning I don’t know exactly what I’m talking about, but I hope I have shed some light on a subject most people don’t know very much about. The main point that I have tried to make throughout is that twins are people too. Just like other siblings, or even close friends, we sometimes act or look like the exact same person. That does not mean we are the same person. We have our own personalities, our own fears and dreams, and our own lives. We go about living these lives just like any other person. So, don’t belive everything you hear. Take the time to go out and find the truth for yourself. Bibliography: none needed
