Psychology Term Paper
Psychology Term Paper 1) “Stress is a negative emotional and physiological process that occurs as individuals try to adjust to or deal with stressors, which are environmental circumstances that disrupt, or threaten to disrupt, individuals’ daily functioning and cause people to make adjustments” (Bernstein 453). Many people lead stressful lives and therefore are in search of ways to relieve their stress. One thing that is believed to help relieve a person’s stress is exercise. Does exercise really relieve a persons stress? This is a question that I find extremely interesting. I feel that from my own past experience with stress, using exercise to deal with this has actually had a positive effect on lowering my stress level. Stress is something that is basic to life, it doesn’t matter whether you are poor, rich, powerful, or happy, because it effects everyone. There are many different forms of stress such as a stressful job, a hard exam, death in the family, financial difficulties, unemployment etc. 2) Hypothesis: A person’s level of stress will be reduced through exercise. Null Hypothesis: A person’s level of stress will not reduce with exercise. Alternative Hypothesis: Stress will be reduced with exercise. The independent variable is the amount of time a person exercises for. This will be measured by using a timer. The dependent variable is the measurement of stress in each individual subject participating in this experiment. This will be measured using a stress test after each of the individuals are done exercising for their allotted time. 3) I will be measuring stress in caucasian males between the ages of 18-25 years old. I will pick the subjects at random and collect the subjects who will participate by asking a graduate student to run it through the psychology department. The subjects will be assigned randomly with no preconceptions so the experiment is more valid. I will use a control group that will help to increase the validity of the experiment. The control group will be the group of subjects that does not participate in the exercise part of the experiment. 4) Well the scores of this experiment would be based on the stress test given to the subjects at the end of their exercise. The test would show that after the subject had exercised the subjects would have measured a lower stress level on their test compared to their score prior to exercise. The validity of this experiment was increased with the help of a control group and also with the use of random assignment. These two factors helped to keep the experiment from having flaws that might alter the results. The experiment overall was valid. 5) One change that could be made if this experiment was to be tested in the future would be the age of the subjects. If the subjects measured were older with careers there might be higher levels of stress measured due to more responsibilities. The age of the subject could reveal a lot more about their stress level. Another change in the experiment could be the backgrounds of the subjects. If that was altered it could reveal that certain races lead more stressful lives or rather work harder than others.
