Most people go through a socialization process that involves overcoming the resistance to drug taking. The people who where interviewed come to the realization that doctors, despite their best efforts, will not clear the confusions about depression. Medications can help one overcome depression but in the end it is up to the person who suffers with depression to make the choice to live. Medication is a complicated debate that will remain until the end of time. There will always be those who agree and those who disagree. David Karp takes a firm stand that although medications can be extremely helpful we must remain aware of the consequences medication can have on an entire society. This leads us into the coping and adapting stage of depression, which Karp describes in chapter five. "Chapter five is on "coping and adapting" This chapter parallels and extends the discussion of chapter three of the stages involved in the construction of an illness identity. My attention in chapter five turns to action, to what individuals do about the pain they eventually label as clinical depression" (I. P. 17 David Karp.) Like all pain we desire for it to be healed. How individuals choose to cope and adapt to their illness depends on how well they understand their pain at that moment in time. People need to come to grips with their illness in order to cope and adapt with the challenge life has brought them.
