Stanley Milgram was born in 1933 in New York City. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Queens College and then his Ph.D. from Harvard. In 1959-1960 Milgram worked with Solomon Asch at Princeton University.Asch did a study of conformity. This was a group experiment and all but one member, the true participant, were really confederates of the experimenter. The confederate subjects were told to pick a line that was clearly not the correct choice. When it came time for the true participant to choose, he had to decide whether to pick the correct answer or conform with the others.
