Are You Sure About What You Say
Are You Sure About What You Say My thoughts about C.S. Lewis’ arguments. Many things can sound good when you say them, and for the most part make sense. Why then don’t we give people chances or sit back a watch to see what happens. In the following I will explain my thoughts on what could happen if you don’t look at everything in the idealistic way. Just because someone talks about a man with “high ideals” doesn’t mean that a person will automatically think he or she cannot share or think about the same high ideals with another person. For one, many people think alike, and could possibly think about the same things. I know for a fact that there are some people out there that when they see a person doing something different or something they have never seen before and could be interested in, they ask questions to find out more about it. I am not saying in any way that a person will always be interested in the same thing, but there is always that possibility. Even complete opposites may think alike on one thing or another. Lewis goes on to say, “perfect behavior may be as unattainable as perfect gear changing when we drive.” That may be true for the people that aren’t very good at driving or that cannot drive at all. What then, about those people that can drive better than average, like professional racecar drivers? To them, switching gears is second nature. They could probably do it better than any average person, blind folded. Now you could say that there are some special circumstances, but aren’t racecar drivers just normal people like you and me? Yes, they have special skills, but so does everyone. Racing is their job, but then what about a basketball player, or a banker? They may be that best at what they do, but it might not be perfect in someone else’s eyes. Take the basketball player for example. Someone watching him may think that he has the worst shot, and that no way could it be perfect. Although for the player, his shot might be perfect for him. Something one person sees as perfect may not be true for everyone else. Lewis also says that if someone “of high ideals is trying to tell no lies of never to commit adultery or not to be a bully,” will think that they deserve to be congratulated on his idealism. Why can’t someone just do something because they want to? I don’t believe that every time someone does something good, they do it because they want to be applauded for it. Don’t get me wrong either because there are people out there that do that. There might also be people that don’t do kind things because they have done them in the past and not been acknowledged for it. True, that is not the point for doing something for someone else, but maybe if we see someone doing something good, that we should let him or her know that they did the right thing. Lewis says, “There are two ways in which the human machine goes wrong.” He says one way is when people drift apart from one another. I do not feel this is true. Some people don’t drift apart at all. Look at married couples that have been married for fifty or more years. The people that might drift apart don’t do it on purpose. They may just lose touch or their interests may change, but not just because they want to. I don’t agree with this being labeled “doing wrong.” I do agree that someone is wrong, like Lewis said, by cheating or bullying. I don’t think someone can do wrong, in these circumstances, by accident. The other way he said humans could go wrong is when things inside a person go wrong. I will agree that it isn’t right, but it isn’t wrong when a person cannot control what happens. Things can go wrong inside a person when something serious happens to them, for example if some one is raped or murdered, or if that happened to someone dear in their family. Violent things can make a person lose their mental capabilities after something like that happens. So it seems when a person goes wrong in most of these situations, it may not be their fault at all. Lewis makes some more analogies when he associates us with a fleet of ships of a musical band. When the band is supposed to provide dance music, but actually plays Dead Marches, they are a failure in what music they were supposed to play. What if they played the marches perfectly? Then I guess it wouldn’t be a total failure after all. What about when the boat is supposed to go to New York, and it goes to Calcutta? If the boat made it all the way to Calcutta with no problems, then it isn’t a total failure either. It sounds like Lewis is saying that when a person doesn’t do what people expect, they are dong wrong or not striving to be perfect. I think perfection can only be performed by people who know what to expect, and since we may never know what to expect then we may never know what perfection looks like. Bibliography:
