May it Be According to Your Word
May it Be According to Your Word The main topic that Jack Reese discussed was how we should as the Church of Christ, deal with and address the interpretations of scripture. Reese also emphasized that "nothing is impossible with God!" He gave several examples: The virgin Mary was promised to marriage to Joseph yet an angel of the Lord visited her and tells her she is going to have a Son, the Savior of the whole world. We ask how can this occur? How can this happen? Always realize that, nothing is impossible with God!; Sara was 79 years old when she was told that she would bear a son. We think today that's impossible not capable because someone of that age is physically beyond child bearing age. We know from doctors and scientists that hormones, organs, and body parts do not function as they used to or at all past a certain age in the majority of the population. Yet still, Nothing is impossible with God!; God chose Israel, the weakest of nations to become His chosen people. Nothing is impossible with God!; God chose Gideon and narrowed down his army to a small group of men who defeated an enormous army who could have easily over taken Gideon and his men. Yet, nothing is impossible with God for He can do all things! All of these things happened because of trust and faith in God. The Bible shows us that God takes something we would think to be impossible and makes the possible, possible. As the Church of Christ Reese says, we are just ordinary folk, a back to the Bible people. We desire to be of the word, we want to do His will, search scripture for ourselves, study, and to think. Yet he said that we have run into a real problem in the 20th century that we think scriptures are boring, are not read the way they should be, and we desire to be entertained in our youth camps and or adult Sunday school classes. Therefore, we do not read the scriptures as much anymore and just keep our Bibles on the night stand, or on the coffee table to make us look like good little Christians. We read into scriptures for our own understanding just to find more evidence that we already believe and not grow closer to God's heart. Jack Reese pointed out three ways that we should look at the Bible. 1) Every passage of scripture has a context. Meaning that everything in the Bible was written for a reason. It is not just words on a page to use and to twist to understand our own situations or circumstances. It was written for a specific people in mind in the historical context that it took place in. We should ask ourselves what is the problem the text is addressing? Remember that the scripture can not mean would it could not have meant. 2) We should ask, What kind of literature is this to interpret it correctly. If it is poetry it should not be taken literally. An example that Reese gave us: a passage in the Bible that says the stars sing. Stars do not really "sing" although scientists of seen that stars emit phonic waves and people twist this information to say that the poetic part that "stars can sing" really means that they do. 3) Acknowledge that all scripture is aspired by God (but not everything is at the center). Jesus said that we should not neglect the other laws, but some things are of first importance. To us the 1st importance should be the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. We should not allow the minor things in life to bother us such as clapping in church, but we should be more focused upon our desire to serve others and to live out what we believe. Reese says that we think too high of ourselves and think that we can read the Bible and simply figure it out every passage on our own. We should not think this way, we should read into the Bible the way it was written, who it was written for, and why it was written for them, only then after that understanding can we apply the same principles to the way that God wants us to live as His people. As a servant of God we should always remember that with God nothing is impossible! And live your life each day as, here I am the servant of the Lord may it be according to your will. Bibliography:
