For example, The U.S. banned prayer in public schools because they had to separate religion from state affairs.Some of the main types of religion in the World today include; Christianity, Islamic, Buddhism, and Jewish. Christianity is the religion derived from Jesus Christ, based on the Bible as sacred scripture (Webster-Merriam). Islamic is the religious faith of Muslims including beliefs in Allah as the sole deity and in Muhammad as his prophet (Webster-Merriam). In these countries, including Afghanistan, religion is politics and politics is religion, there is no separation of the two. They are also the largest religion in the world yet their definition of religion does not match that of the dictionary listings above. Buddhism is a religion of eastern and central Asia growing out of the teaching of Guatama Buddha that suffering is inherited in life and that one can be liberated from it be mental and moral self-purification (Webster-Merriam). In the Buddhist countries they don’t necessarily have a certain time they have to pray nor is it with a community or a group of people. They usually practice solitary worship, instead of church they pray at their homes or in a temple. This religion also does not match up to the definitions given in Webster-Merriam or Encarta. Judaism is a religion developed among the ancient Hebrews and characterized by belief in one transcendent God who has revealed himself to Abraham, Moses, and The Hebrew prophets and by a religious life in accordance with scriptures and rabbinic traditions (Webster-Merriam). So are the definitions in these dictionaries really true to all religions? Throughout the world, we all to often judge people based on their religious beliefs, feeling that if they aren’t like us they are strange.
