Then the robber took Bonney's car keys. Finally, Jackson slipped into the passenger seat, pulled a gun and demanded, ``give it up!'' Words were exchanged. Then Jackson shot Bonney three times. He claimed it was an accident but the jury didn't believe him. After a two-week trial, jurors convicted Jackson of murder and recommended execution. Circuit Judge Lydia C. Taylor sentenced Jackson to death. Right now, more than 3,500 inmates sit on Death Row in America. Almost all are poor, some are retarded and a few are under the age of 18. In addition, most had legal representation that ranged from inadequate to grossly incompetent. How is due process in effect when most all of the inmates cannot afford a competent attorney, or for that matter even knows what an attorney is. Our fourth amendment rights are being violated when mentally retarded and children are being executed. because minors, and mentally retarded lack the maturity, experience and self-control to understand the consequences of their actions....
