job, Edgar performed all duties of an editor and was also able to work on his on writings. He wrote pieces at this time which widened the popular tradition of gothic fiction. His writings were aimed at creating something that suspends and call into the doubt of the laws of the universe. Edgar personally liked the type of personal narration called “ tale of sensation” in which the people usually are solitary victims of a life-threatening predicament. Through the magazine Edgar was able to create a reputation as a critic of “blunt, unshakable principle, and frankness.” He was not afraid of giving bad criticism to respected authors. In 1836, Edgar was officially married to Virginia. Edgar, Maria, and Virginia stayed in Richmond for sixteen months, but Edgar felt uncomfortable living in Richmond because it reminded him of John Allan. During the fall if 1836, Edgar began ignoring his editorial duties and went back to drinking. Edgar was forced to leave the magazine. The three of them then moved to New York. How Edgar supported them, is unsure. He most likely did some free-lancing, and published a few tales or poems. Their stay there was short and in the Spring of 1838, they moved to Philadelphia, where he became interested in getting a government job. He never received a government job, but a New York company wanted to publish Edgar’s first book of fiction. The reviews of the book were mostly full of praise for creating entertaining adventures. While in Philadelphia, Edgar educated Virginia, mostly in French and mathematics which was what he was good at. She was very much into music, so he bought her a harp and a piano so satisfy her. Edgar although disliking Burton accepted his offer to become assistant editor for his magazine.This period became his busiest. He wrote many reviews and his own articles.
