English as a second language

is doing just that. The school district located 150 miles from the Mexican border wanted it’s students to be able, as adults to participate in commerce between Mexico and the United States(Baird and Kuravackal,1). One of the first requirements of the program is that the students must take four years of Spanish. Students were only required to take four years of English, but with this program they will take Spanish as well. Many students already speak Spanish to some degree either “Spanglish” or “pure” Mexican Spanish(Baird and Kuravacka,2). The second requirement in this program is for students to use their skills by telecommunications. All students would use both English and Spanish as an interactive telecommunication systems with teachers and students throughout not only the NAFTA region but the world( Braid and Kuravackal,2). The third requirement that had to be modified was that all students and all techer4s participate in at least one educational exchange program in a foreign country(Braid and Kuravackal,2). The main reasons why this requirement has not been enforced is due to the behavioral problems of some of the students and the money involved in funding them. As more partnerships with businesses and schools materialize, more exchange placements for students should occur(Braid and Kuravackal,2). The last requirement for the program is for all students to study a third language. Although many of the students do not take a third language they are hoping this will broaden their learning skills. English remains the core of language study and requirements at ISA(Braid and Kurvackal,2). English as a second language classes do not exist in this curriculum of school, students are allowed to seek help from the ESL teacher in the school itself.
