The childrenthat are growing up in the war environment, will see fighting as the only way to solve problems. With a lack of food, schooling and religion, the children will not fulfil their full potential as theygrow. The government may not know who is a rebel in the war and who is not, which willresult in consequences to all the people. Because a war was begun, in the future it will bedifficult for the people to speak to the government about problems. The greedy rebels do notthink of the conflicts they are causing by fighting for something they want. The governmentdoes not know, but some of the people may support its side of the war, and that there could bemore than one opinion within the people. The rebels do not directly force the villagers intorefugee camps, but they induce it. The people have no homes because they bandits have burnedthem because they are angry at the rebels. Having no food is a big push for the people to leave,as well as to seek medical help as they are ill and dying. All the people need is food and safety,as Gordimer states, “We wanted to go where there were no bandits and there was food, we wereglad there must be a place.” (page 122). These basic needs are taken from these people aspunishment for the rebels fighting. These problems however, can be resolved with the help ofpositive human qualities.The greed of the bandits and the rebels can be resolved through sharing and co-operation. The nuns at the refugee camp give food, offer help and co-operate with the people. By givingfood, the nuns are helping the children get their good health back.
