Growing Old in Henry Vaughns The Waterfall

hildhood and adolescent years. As I stated earlier this section looks like a river running through rapids on its way to the “big drop.” This is very similar to a child growing up, and learning about life. This section lacks the organization of the second section, much like how a child, though blessed with intellect, and potential is often unable to harness or control the enormous energy he or she may have for life. Along with the visual effect that this pattern establishes, this section of the poem also reminds me very specifically of the stages I have grown through in my own personal development. The lines vary between short and long, allowing for one to view each part of the section as an aspect of growing up. To me the shorter lines represent the many years that young people spend living to fast to learn anything, and the longer lines may represent those years that are spent learning about reality. When reading lines seven through twelve I feel as though this is a description of a young adult coming out of adolescence, and entering adulthood. The common pass Where, clear as glass, All must descend not to an end; But quickened by this deep and rocky grave, Rise to a longer course more bright and brave.This is a part of life that I can relate to right now because I am having many of the same feelings. It is as if the boy that I used to know is a stranger to the man I wish to become. I can understand how one could view this as period of their life as falling off the drop off of a water fall, because of the anxiety the goes along with becoming an adult. The second section of the poem is like a rebirth. There is a feeling as though the waterfall has matured and now can offer wisdom after the experience it has been through. On lines nineteen through twenty-two Vaughn asks: Or since those drops are all sent back So sure to thee, that none doth lack, Why should frail flesh doubt anymore, that what god takes he shall restore?
