Penalizing Profanity

tural part of our upbringing, and laws against it will do nothing to prevent it.The exposure of profanity during childhood is the leading provoker of the usage of this language. Children are constantly under the influence of coarse language, yet are disciplined when using it. The young are impressionable as is, and these mixed signals make it exceedingly difficult for them to differentiate between right and wrong. By the time a child reaches the second grade, they are probable to know well over half of the “bad” words. The cause? Television of course. Overall, in movies and television shows, “good guys” used profanity four times as often as “bad guys”, and the use of this crude language was criticized only 3 percent of the time. Therefore, this gave the idea that profanity was “cool”.The majority of parents punish their children for using profane language. However, if they, and others, strongly believed that coarse language was wrong and unacceptable, why did they choose not to put filters on television sets? Or have lengthy discussions with their children about it? The answer is obvious; they themselves don’t find anything truly wrong with it. There are two logical ways to look at profanity. Many believe it to be crude and unacceptable, while others believe it to be a part of free speech. Though it may have a few drawbacks, profanity is a good way to release steam. It is a way to release anger without violence. It lets a person emit their steam in a manner, which, yes may be inappropriate to some, however, is more or less not harming to spectators. When a person liberates their anger through profanity, it may even provide a feeling of relief.
