for the Reform of Marijuana Legalization which discriminalizemarijuana petitioned that marijuana be moved from catagory 1 to catagory 2 but weredenied the grant. The reason for this petition was that marijuana could be used as atheraputic medicine and because it was less toxic and was more effecient thanconventional medicine. Since the National Oranization for the Reform of Marijuana came out in 1972 withthe petition a variety of legal decision concerning marijuana have been handled. After thatyear 11 states decriminalized the use of marijuana during the early 70’s and late 70’s onlyto go back and recriminalize the use of marijuana in the 80’s and 90’s. In the 70’showeveer there was a claim that mairjuana relieved the nausea. This lead to 6 differentstates who conducted the study for that claim. Then when the AIDs epidemic came aroundsome patients use marijuana to relieve some of there pains. They claimed it worked andduring this time there was an increase of possession charges. The patients said “they wereusing the drug to treat medical problems and violation of the law was therefore justified.”Just recently California and Arizona tried to pass two refrenda’s that wouldlegalize marijuana use in the medical field. Both states took polls and the public did want itbut the refrenda’s are not going with federal laws which prohibits the use of marijuana inthe medical field. This implementation raises doubts about letting them use marijuana inthe medical field. Since then the refrenda was passed and is used in the medical field inArizona and in California. But in 1997 the Office of National Drug Control Policy askedwhether IOM whether they would conduct a review on the use of marijuana, the value,and the harm and benefits attributed to it. ...
