The victim is a young girl, one who iswell known to the pedophile; typically a neighbor, relative, or afriend of the family. And, it is not unlikely that a childsinnocently uninhibited show of affection is what triggers thefirst episode. Once the first episode has taken place, thisrelationship may last for months, or even years if it is notfound out and if the child does not tell his or her parents. The pedophile has been described in much the same way as theexhibitionist and voyeur. This would be referring to a man whohas failed socially, sexually, as well as in the adult world andthus goes in search of a less threatening relationship, such as ainnocent child. Most societies have had throughout their histories a sort oftaboo on incest. Kinsey and his co-workers (1948) reportedthat .5 percent of the males interviewed in their study admittedto acts of incest, and in view of the fact that incest tends toremain a well-kept family secret, the incidence is probablyconsiderably higher (Coon 689). While, brother-sister incest is the most common, there aretraces of father-daughter incest, but mother-son incest is veryrare. Brother-sister incest usually occurs accidentally inlower-class families where brothers and sisters share the samebeds. In father-daughter incestuous relationships, the elementsseem clearer. Even though most people assume the father to be apromiscuous male, taking his daughter as just one of his manyunselective sexual contacts, this is more than likely not true. Many reports state that most incestuous fathers confine theirextramarital sexual experiences with their daughter or daughtersonly, starting with eldest and going down the line as the yearspass.
