al equality into my life. I was in this school system from the time I was eight until the time I was eleven. The interesting part of the society in this school system is the often-reoccurring discrimination against white people. The majority of the people who live in Hawaii are not white. They are generally Hawaiian or Oriental. Therefore, whites are a minority in that state. I t was the first time that I experienced discrimination in any form directed towards myself. In the high school, white students were often beat up by other students. The fights would occur for no reason other than the student was white. This and other incidents led many people to send their children to one of the many private schools in the state. Naturally, experiencing these things led me to a better understanding of discrimination. It also taught me at a very young age that social equality is an important value to have and it should be taught to everyone. The values described and explained here are just a few of the hundreds of beliefs and values that I hold as important. I was not born with these values, but rather learned them from the influences of formal and informal social organizations. I use these values and beliefs to shape the reasoning behind the decisions I make every day. References CitedBecker, Howard S.
