Byung In Lee, a Kuk Sool Master stated in Inside Karate: “ Without relaxation there is no speed, since you will be too tense and tight. Relaxation does not mean the loose relaxation of cooked spaghetti, it should be a calm relaxation that unites your concentration, focus and intention.”To practice the rules for breaking targets, the martial artist needs training. Two forms of training are external, and internal (Hallander, “Breaking” 2). The external training is directly physical. The internal training known as Ki (or internal energy) has two types, Nei Gung (inside strength and energy) and Wei Gung (outside active force, as in muscle and tendon strength) (2).Three different breaking techniques are strong support, for your hand, elbow and head (simplest type). Second, semi-strong, one or more people hold the target for the martial artist (mainly consists of kicking) (Hallander, “Breaking” 2). Thirdly, no support, target is only held by one person’s fingers needing speed, accuracy and the correct Jwa-Sae (stance) to break the target (3).Kuk Sool training will help the martial artist develop strength, quickness, balance, timing, flexibility, coordination and at the same time, self-discipline, self-confidence, respect, mental alertness, self-defense and a sense of fun (Sareyvoth). The self-discipline teaches the martial artist to set goals and stick with them, building inner strength. The self-confidence helps to reach new and higher goals as the martial artist skills develop (“How Will” 1).With respect the martial artist learns to treat others and oneself in a correct manner.
