ecording everything. As flimsy a case as it was, Hoffa was able to escape the charges with clever maneuvering from his attorney. With the trial being held in Detroit and eight Negroes on the jury, Hoffa’s attorney brought in Joe Lois to shake hands with Hoffa in the jury’s presence. With the display of unity between Hoffa and blacks, no blacks would want to confine Hoffa to a position where he would be unable to aid blacks.As Hoffa was fighting for the Presidency of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Kennedy tried to use the McClellan Committee hearings to bring down Hoffa. Instead, every question fielded by Hoffa was answered in such a manner that Hoffa conveyed a squeaky clean image of a man doing his job to the best of his abilities. Because he worked over seventy hours a week as President, Hoffa knew exactly what was going on in the Teamsters. Hoffa was completely dedicated to the people with whom he rarely came into contact with. After the hearings, Kennedy again looked like a devil trying to bring down angel.In May 1962 Hoffa was indicted for accepting payments from an employer in violation of the Taft Harley Act. Again the trial ended with a hung jury and Kennedy again failing to have captured his man. As Hoffa was preparing to continue living his life as President of the Teamsters, Kennedy brought jury tampering charges against Hoffa. As the trial began Kennedy benefited form two breaks. The first was the judge, Frank W. Wilson, had been appointed by President John F. Kennedy. The other was that Wilson would not allow any of Edward Partin’s past to be admitted even though he was Kennedy’s primary witness. With the trial winding down, it came down to who the jury would believe. On one end, it was Hoffa and all the charges that had been brought against him.
