An enticing outlook except that practice was to disclose that to educate the masses the educator must himself take on the essential characteristic of the masses, their anonymity. For the contemporary mind no prospect holds a deeper dread. In practice the art of the social message found itself shuffling feebly between the action- inspiring poster and the esthetic ideal of personal style (Artnet, p.4). Greenberg on the other hand felt artistic quality could be judged by the degree of purity art achieved in its own medium and effects exclusive to itself. During the 1960s many artists and critics who saw his view too self-referential and resistant to change questioned Greenberg. A lot of contemporary criticism had been dedicated to refuting his theories. But recently, his theories have been reconsidered once again in the light of politics....
