Both give insight into analyzing Hamlet. Laertes and Fortinbras can be seen as two endpoints of the characterization of Hamlet. Laertes is the extreme irrational while Fortinbras represents the logical more thoughtful man of action. Hamlet lies in the middle of this spectrum.
