The early years of the Klan were vicious and out of control the U.S. government couldn’t even stop them. The KKK was one of the first terrorist groups ever in the United States. The Klan soon had 3000 members, it started spreading throughout the south like a mad fire raging out of control. All the feelings of hatred in the south were soon revealed more than ever. When people heard of this organization they flocked to it they couldn’t wait to be in the KKK. Klan members who believed in white superiority, soon began to terrorize blacks. They would beat blacks with sticks and lead pipes and sometimes murder them. Blacks also got terrorized so they wouldn’t vote. The KKK didn’t want any other political offices to be held by another black sympathizer. It got so bad in the south that the federal government had to send in troops to try and help the blacks and keep order. It ended up that the KKK was too strong for the federal government. They had to withdraw troops from the south. The Klan was unstoppable and uncontrollable. They became so uncontrollable and violent that the grand wizard, former confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, officially disbanded the Klan in 1869. Like it’s early days, from 1915 until around 1921 the Ku Klux Klan went through a lot of changes and a huge growth in membership. William J. Simmons, a former Methodist preacher, organized a new Klan in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1915 as a patriotic, Protestant fraternal society. This new Klan directed its activity against, not just blacks, but any group it considered un-American, including any immigrants, Jews, and Roman Catholics.
