Once a person knows my secret life, I find myself wanting to be around them. It gives me a feeling of stability in an insatiable world. Depression is a disease that slowly creeps up on you over a lengthy period of time. The interviewees explained how they felt different as a child like something was not quite right. Identity of depression evolves over time. "… a depression consciousness arises in an extraordinarily patterned way (III. P. 55 David Karp.) Each of the people Karp interviewed went through a number of stages. The first stage is a period of inchoate feelings during which they lacked the vocabulary to label their experience as depression. The next is a phase during which they conclude that something is really wrong with me. Eventually a crises stage that thrusts them into a world of therapeutic experts. Finally a stage of coming to grips with an illness identity during which they theorize about the cause(s) for their difficulty and evaluate the prospects for getting beyond depression."Chronic emotional illness poses especially difficult problems of sense-making because the source of the problem is unclear and its course uncertain" (III. P. 75 David Karp.) Depression is an illness that takes years to develop and understand. Almost all those who suffer with depression find hope in medication. In chapter four Karp describes the affects and the meanings of medication. Medications affect each individual differently. The majority of people who take medication feel results in a short time. The problem with medications is you never know what side affects you are doing to experience. "I will never take another pill in my life." (Male Professor) "All I can tell you is, oh my God, you know when you’re on the right medication."
