Viruses and Diseases

isk factors (Ewald 157). In Finland incendance of heart disease is ranked highest in the world that is why many labs there are working cooperatively on that problem. To assess the presence of infection after heart attacks a large sample of blood serum was collected by the University of Helsinki and distributed to several labs. When Maia Leinonan of the National Public Health Institute of Helsinki analyzed the samples for Chlamydia she found that 70% had antibodies for it which was significantly higher than the serum from the control group that had not had heart attacks. And the only species of Chlamydia that could produce such a high antibody rate was Chlamydia Pneumoniae it is a bacteria that is responsible for 1 of every 5 incidence of pneumonia and there were no recent incidence of infection in any of the patients. The response of the scientific community to the hypothetical possibility that the organism at the site of arthersclerotic damage in the artery is actually doing the damage or triggering an immunological response that does the damage was met with mild fascination to strong ridicule (Ewald Evolution 178).In 1992 while studding sections of arthersclerotic plaques from arteries removed during bypass operations the South African researcher Alan Shor found the bacteria Chlamydia Pneumoniae. He then sent samples to the lab at the University of Washington in Seattle. And after performing several tests confirmed that it was indeed Chlamydia Pneumoniae. But such evidence was not enough to satisfy the many critics in the scientific community who prefer to side with the alternative hypothetical research involving diet or genetics the two sides that most researchers have taken (Ewald 109).After several decades and billons of dollars a common gene has not been found. And the researchers that favor the good diet hypothesis have yet to make up their minds. First they have stated a low fat and low cholesterol diet was the answer. Later st...
