Hating another person just because of their race is not just affecting the adults, but it has a huge impact on our children. An anonymous teen responded to the Public Broadcast Stations hate crime topic via the talkback forum on their website. On November 26, 2001, the teen wrote, why do people think it is right to kill other people because of their race? Its not right, some sports that I want to play I cant because I am white. So how can this stop? This is a child with an impressionable young mind, but he or she even knows hate crimes are wrong? This young adult is seeking guidance and an explanation. Another teen responded to the same topic in the same manner. On October 31, 2001, the teen wrote, Hate is a big problem where I come from. I am only thirteen years old. Im half black and to a lot of people around here thats a big deal. I get harassed every day and called nigger and it really affects my everyday life. Im not as good in school. My grades are failing and even my friends are fading, but theres no one here to help because I live in the middle of the country with nothing but whites, and they all look at me like Im nasty. Now this kind of stuff should not be allowed. Should it? What do you say to this child? How can you help? There are a few ways that you can help eradicate these hate crimes. First, you can teach your children to love everyone regardless of the hue of their skin. You also need to let your voice be heard. Your state and national officials were elected by the people for the people. Write your U.S. Senator or Representative. Start a petition to overturn the decision of the Virginia Supreme Court. Get involved in your community to help make it safe. Most importantly, we must vote. Take the time to research the candidates, and vote for the one who you feel can better serve the people.
