His orders were well-given, his batteries responded wee under fire, and his troops were well-handed. The first attack on Lee was to his right by the vicious charge of the British Light-Horse. This attack was thrice repelled, yet slowly they drove the Americans back to a small hedgerow shelter . Here the Americans made a determined fight, and successfully withstood the repeated charges. Despite Knox’s well-served batteries from Comb’s Hill, the weight and numbers of the British slowly pushed the Americans back, but not without them keeping up a well-preserved line, all the while providing a decent resistance to the British forces that were slowly gaining ground. In the marshy waters of Wemrock, Lee, once again, made a successful effort to halt the British advances. However, his troops were simply becoming worn out form the heat and the hard fighting they had endured since almost 6:00 AM. At this point, a much more satisfied Washington took control and graciously allowed Lee’s force to the back of the lines for rest and recuperation. In Washington’s new line, Green still commanded the left, Lord Stirling was still on the right, and Washington was still in the center. However, Wayne and his troops, who held the advantageous key to the situation, had gained ground behind the enemy in a few barns and outbuildings. He had placed a battery of six field pieces, under Maudit, in a nearby orchard, and supported it with 500 men . The Batteries of Knox, still on Comb’s Hill, a half-mile away, commanded the battlefield. The first fighting in this new line took place as the center of the American lines repelled several British charges, and responded with a charge of their own.
