(Act I, iii,pp.144-146). The second form used to add to the atmosphere, the image ofdarkness. In a Shakesperarean tragedy, we have known him tocreate a special tone, or atmoshere to the show of darkness in atragedy.2 In Macbeth , Shakespeare draw upon the special design ofthe witches, the guilt in Macbeths soul, and the darkness of the nightto establish the mood. All the scence take place at night or in somedark spot; for example, the appearance of the dagger, the murder ofDuncan, the murder of Banquo, and the scence in which Lady Macbethis sleep walking. Darkness is also the time that the traveler hurrys toreach safety in his inn, when Banquo rides toward home to meet hiskillers, futhermore it is the time when the wolf howls, the owlscreams, and when murder steals forth to do his work3Darkness symbolizes many things in this play. First and mostsignificant, darkness stands for evil and death. The darkness couldpartially blind out all the horrible things that occur at night. For onlyin darkness can such evil deeds be done. Secondly, the darknessshows one of Lady Macbeths weaknesses: her fear of dark. In theplay, phrases of fear come from her mouth even in her sleep. Shebelieves that darkness ot the place of torment.Throughout the entire drama, the sun only shines twice. Thefirst appearence of the sun is in the ironic passage when Duncan seesthe swallow around the Castle of Death. Another time is at the closeof the avenging army gathers to rid the earth of its shame.
