TEMPEST

Caliban. This play represents civilization as being good, but can lead to perversions and distortions that are unacceptable. An example of how Prospero understands the differences of evil between nature, (Caliban), and the civilized such as Antonio, is when the royal party is seen by Miranda for the first time. Miranda, who has not seen any civilized people, besides her father says “o, wonder!/How many goodly creatures are there here!/ How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,/ That has such people in’t!”. Prospero reflects for a moment and then says, “’Tis new to thee”. HE says this because Miranda does not truly understand mankind. She is innocent and pure, one of Shakespeare’s loveliest characters. But Prospero knows his daughter does not understand the world. For among these beautiful, “goodly” creatures are Sebastian a man who would kill his own brother, Alonso who would have ruined two lives for wealth, and Antonio who left his brother and niece to die for power. This is a play about Godliness, redemption, forgiveness, and the basic struggle between nature and civilization, which is carried out through the relationship between Caliban and Prospero. Prospero, the God like character plays an important role in the lives of all the characters. He is the reason they are on the island. He uses his powers to control them, as well as to reprimand them for their evil doings. Prospero, the civilized man, takes form as being close to Godliness. He puts each character through some form of hardship as a trial, and demands they repent. In the end Caliban repents for his plotting against Prospero, the reader sees Prospero as “prospering”. And as a civilized man with God like qualities, he forgives them of their sins and evil plotting....
