The Many Evils of Iago

ossibly could be true of us" (Modern 3). Underneath Iago's mask of honesty is a man made up of pure hatred for the person who trusts him the most. Iago's hatred for Othello is spurned by jealousy. He decides to make Othello feel the strongest sexual jealousy possible. People can only remain under a mask for so long. It does not take long before the mask eventually begins to dissolve into the real being of the person. This is what happens to Iago. The deeper into his plot that he gets, the more his real personality is revealed. His real personality is that of a villainous monster. He deceives and lies until his victims do not what is real and what is illusion. His victims tend to very gullible, which is just what Iago thrives off of. He then uses their good personality traits to bring their downfall. In the end Iago gets what he deserves. Iago is slain by his biggest victim, Othello. His mask is also completely removed in the end because of the consistent questioning of his wife. She shows everyone just the kind of villainous man that he is. He then turns his anger to her and kills her. Othello, Desdemona, and Emilia have to all die in the same bed with their victimizer. In the end all masks are revealed, and everyone is seen for what they really are. Works CitedBloom, Harold. Shakespeare Tragedies. New York: Chelsea House, 1985.- - -.
