Many supporters of a multilingual society in America say that declaring one national language will exterminate the pride people have for their natural country. They say that pride is directly related to a person’s culture and a person’s language; thus creating a national language will reduce their national pride. This is definitely not the case. If anything, the effects on America’s national pride have been affected the most. Since there is no official language, Americans feel the need to alter their patriotic actions so as not to offend people of different ethnic backgrounds. The issue moves directly from a multilingual issue to a general multicultural issue. For example, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, school officials removed a “God Bless America” sign from the school in fear that someone might be offended. This might be understandable seeing that God in schools remains a debatable issue, but take this example: Channel 12 News in Long Island, New York ordered all flags be removed from reporters and the red, white, and blue ribbons removed from the lapels of reporters because management did not want to appear biased and felt that our nation’s flag might give the appearance that they “leaned one way or another.” This nation worries too much about offending other cultures simply by being patriotic. In one word, it is ridiculous. By declaring English the national language, it creates a new sense of energy, and a new sense of righteousness. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, the United States has experienced a surge of patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust had barely settled in New York and Washington D.C. when the “politically correct” crowd began complaining that the nation’s patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life...
