(C# 7.7) Conclusion: The KKK was and still is a hate group today, which had three major periods of activity, the first was the mid 1860’s to the early 1870’s, the second was 1915 to 1944 and the third was from the late 1940’s until the early 1970’s as for the KKK today after about 1980 there was a decline in numbers .The Klan is still around but there are very few members and hardly any activity from them. The Klan still goes on with meetings and cross burnings today but is pretty much silent. Murder, Vandalism, and Discrimination. When you first hear these words what comes to your mind? A gang of young hoodlums, a misguided cult of some sorts, a psychotic killer? Maybe but there is a group of people within the United States who have created an organization who get away with these crimes everyday. This group is the KKK. The KKK is a secret society, which has made a humongous impact on our society, our nation and our minorities. We had to live with hatred and disgust that the KKK posses. There is not very much that the government can do to the Klan due to their first amendment rights. The first amendment gives them freedom of speech, which they use to discriminate, freedom of religion, the KKK see their organization as a religion, and the freedom to assemble, which gives them the right to hold their meetings in public places. The Klan has Membership everywhere you look. There are even chapters around our parts. The Civil War had the biggest impact and was the initial spark for the KKK. After a short time the Klan that was ran out of an old barn grew to be huge. The UKA, United Klan’s of America stepped in and helped the Ku Klux Klan get started. The Klan was one of the very first terrorist groups ever in U.S. history. The KKK is a hate group which has had three major periods of activity, the first was the mid 1860’s to the early 1870’s, the second was 1915 to 1944 and the third was from the late 1940’s until the early 1970’s. After the Civil War there were feelings of hatred and disgust towards blacks and other minorities, this is where the KKK started. The Klan stared in 1866 by six confederate veterans who hated blacks with a passion. These six men started a social club in Pulaski, Tennessee. One of these six men was the confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, he is the man credited for founding and starting the Ku Klux Klan. The name Ku Klux Klan was derived from the Greek word kuklos, which means circle and the English word clan, meaning group. The early days of the Klan were rough at first but eventually became organized and stable. The Klan received a lot of help from the UKA; the United Klan’s of America, which helped support the Klan’s uprising. The UKA has helped many hate groups throughout history. After the Klan had started they had to come up with names for there leaders, they thought a lot of things over before finally deciding with the still remaining names. They decided that the leader of the entire United States was to be called the Grand Wizard/Imperial Wizard. This is the highest position a Klansmen can hold. This man which is in this position has to look over every single chapter in the U.S. if something goes wrong he is going to get blamed . The Grand Wizard knows all and hears all from within the organization. If somebody infiltrates the Klan to get information or spy he will find out almost instantly where the trouble is coming from. The Grand Dragon is the name they decided to be given to the leader of an entire state. This job holds almost the same responsibility as the grand wizard but not as much authority or size. The Grand dragon goes to a different meeting every month and should within a year he should have been to every chapter in his state to talk with them and make sure everything is running smooth. Once a year all the Grand Dragons meet with the Grand Wizard and discuss everything that has been happening and what all they have accomplished within there state. The Grand Goblin is a regional director in charge of a domain. The grand goblins main job is to assist the grand wizard in his duties. The Exalted Cyclops is the president of a local chapter. His duties are to run his chapter and make sure they have there monthly meetings and that everything runs smoothly so that nothing bad happens. The Klabee is the treasurer. The Klabee takes care of all financial items that are received or expended. Now that the Klan had leaders and names for them they could get down to business. The early years of the Klan were vicious and out of control the U.S. government couldn’t even stop them. The KKK was one of the first terrorist groups ever in the United States. The Klan soon had 3000 members, it started spreading throughout the south like a mad fire raging out of control. All the feelings of hatred in the south were soon revealed more than ever. When people heard of this organization they flocked to it they couldn’t wait to be in the KKK. Klan members who believed in white superiority, soon began to terrorize blacks. They would beat blacks with sticks and lead pipes and sometimes murder them. Blacks also got terrorized so they wouldn’t vote. The KKK didn’t want any other political offices to be held by another black sympathizer. It got so bad in the south that the federal government had to send in troops to try and help the blacks and keep order. It ended up that the KKK was too strong for the federal government. They had to withdraw troops from the south. The Klan was unstoppable and uncontrollable. They became so uncontrollable and violent that the grand wizard, former confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, officially disbanded the Klan in 1869. Like it’s early days, from 1915 until around 1921 the Ku Klux Klan went through a lot of changes and a huge growth in membership. William J. Simmons, a former Methodist preacher, organized a new Klan in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1915 as a patriotic, Protestant fraternal society. This new Klan directed its activity against, not just blacks, but any group it considered un-American, including any immigrants, Jews, and Roman Catholics. The Ku Klux Klan grew rapidly from here and had more than 2 million members throughout the country by the mid-1920's. Although the Klan still reverted at times to violence of previous years, burning crosses, torturing and murdering those who they opposed, most of the Klan acted through peaceful means. The KKK instead became a more powerful political force as it elected many public officials throughout the nation. However, eventually the organization became weakened by disagreements among the leadership and because of public criticism of Klan violence. By 1944 the Ku Klux Klan had faded out again. Despite the large growth, the depression had a great effect on the Klan. The Klan lost significant numbers due to the cost of membership. During the economic depression in the U.S. the Klan’s membership dropped to only several thousand. These members were only active on a very small scale. In 1940 the Klan joined with German American Bund, an organization financed in part by the government of Nazi Germany. The German American Bund is An organization of ethnic Germans living in the U.S. which was openly pro-Nazi Aside from its veneration of Hitler, its program included anti-Semitism and strong anti-Communism. In February 1939 ,A rally in New York's Madison Square Garden, attracted 20,000 people, many of whom chanted "Heil Hitler."In 1944 it disbanded formally when the KKK was unable to pay back taxes owed to the federal government. The KKK had very low resources at this time in their existence. The KKK was down on money, people and leaders. With an organization with what was then seen as no future the leaders of the KKK wanted out. They didn’t want to go down with the others. People didn’t join not only because of the money but also because of the time you had to put in as a Klansmen. Poor and Broke tragedy strikes the Klan, but later on tragedy strikes the rest of the world. After the entry of the United States into World War II, the Klan curtailed its activities .Revival of Klan activities after the war led to widespread public sentiment for the suppression of the organization. It suffered a setback in its national stronghold, Georgia, when that state revoked the Klan charter in 1947. With the death of its strongest postwar leader, the obstetrician Samuel Green, of Atlanta, Georgia, Klan unity broke down into numerous, independent, competing units, which often did not last long enough to be placed on the list of subversive organizations issued by the U.S. attorney general. After the U.S. Civil Rights act of 1964 the Klan experienced a marked increase in membership reaching and estimated 40,000 members. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was formed initially to stop segregation completely. When Klansmen heard this they weren’t very happy. Acknowledged Klan leaders ran for public office in the South, built up sizable numbers of votes. Klan members killed a lot of people in this time period. Many people believe the Klan had sanctioned all of the killings due to the press, but from what the Klan said and has stuck by the killers were members but took it upon themselves to murder all of those people.
